The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition, organised every five years by the Finnish Cultural Foundation since 1984, counts among the most prestigious competitions of its kind in the world. The sixth Mirjam Helin Singing Competition will again be bringing the best young vocal talents to Helsinki on 1-12 August 2009.

Previous winners include mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca and bass Rene Pape. The competition became a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (Federation Mondiale des Concours Internationaux de Musique, Geneva) in 1987.

The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition is intended for young singers with experience and maturity. The competition has two categories, one for women and one for men. Women born in 1978 or later and men born in 1976 or later are eligible to participate in the competition, regardless of nationality.

The competition is known for demanding a broad repertoire (Baroque music, Lied, opera) while at the same time allowing great liberty in the choice of music. The program does not include any obligatory compositions or composers. The Semifinals do, however, include a song by a Finnish composer.

Interested candidates are invited to apply through the competition website by Monday 16 February 2009. More information in Finnish and English on the website www.mirjamhelin.fi.
